Assistant Director - Mental and Social Health Programs

IPA are a leading supplier of recruitment solutions to the Australian Government. Our Federal Government client is seeking the services of an experienced manager and/or senior professional to provide leadership to their Community and Peer Program Family stream

About the role

In this role you will:

  • provide leadership and guidance to a team of regionally based peer workers.
  • oversee the work of a small team, delivering projects to strengthen and expand support options provided to families by our client.

The role involves using one's lived experience to respectfully educate and advise; influencing change with both internal and external stakeholders to improve understandings of military service, the needs of consumers, families and carers, and of recovery-oriented, person centred and trauma informed care.


The successful candidate's main responsibilities will include;

  • Using lived experience of military family life and of mental health recovery for the purposes of leading program development, service improvement and stakeholder engagement activities.
  • Taking a lead role in informing the continuous improvement of service delivery for families of current and ex-serving ADF personnel including through research, design, implementation and evaluation of family-focused projects and with a dedicated focus on the expansion and improvement of the program.
  • Overseeing and contributing to the development of advice, briefings, papers, submissions and correspondence for use in both internal and external decision-making forums.
  • Providing supervision, mentoring and coaching for direct reports to effectively manage performance and encourage professional growth.

Selection Criteria

  • Identify as a person with lived experience of military family life and of mental health issues, which may include as a relative/carer of an ex-ADF member with a history of mental health issues.
  • Highly experienced in leading teams
  • Experience implementing programs, projects, practice change or continuous improvement agendas
  • Strong demonstrated capacity to engage strategically with stakeholders from a range of personal and professional backgrounds
  • Well-developed writing and oral presentation skills, with experience writing policies and guidelines
Highly Desirable
  • Previous experience providing support in the mental health sector
  • A tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in mental health (e.g., Certificate IV in Mental Health, Peer Work).
  • Previous experience in mental health peer work.
  • Leadership of a lived experience or peer workforce.
  • Experience working in the Australian Public Service
